Nine-year-old Mia Widd has zip-wired, donned fancy dress, and handed out leaflets to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

The youngster, who has raised hundreds of pounds for the charity, is inspired by her 19-year-old brother brother, Arryn, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

“Mia has only ever seen her brother in a wheelchair and she just wants to help Arryn and people like him to have a good life,” says Mia’s dad, Dean, who is Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Regional Development Manager for Scotland.

For several years now, while other youngsters have been out playing, Mia has been spending her weekends rattling buckets. Her confidence has built up over the years and with it the support she gets from the public.

Mia, from Stirling, has taken on a Scottish ‘Zipping for Muscles’ challenge – a 230-metre zip wire reaching speeds of 40 miles per hour.

She also dressed as Bat Girl at a ‘Move a Mile for Muscles’ event at Castle Semple Loch and has helped out with station and store collections across Scotland.

Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Chief Executive, Catherine Woodhead, said:

Mia has shown remarkable maturity in giving up her time to take on both exhilarating activities and tireless fundraising and she has shown a selfless ‘go and do’ attitude to make a difference for her brother and others with a muscle-wasting condition.

Last year, Mia’s efforts won her Saltire Achievement of the Year at Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Inspire Awards.
