Mum praises "amazing" advocacy team who helped overturn son's DLA rejection

Logan Lightly is a triplet and turns seven this month. He loves nothing more than playing with his siblings Loxie and Jaxon, but sometimes finds it hard to keep up. That’s because in February this year he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Logan’s mum, Karen, said: “He struggles to run, jump, climb and keep up with his siblings, and falls frequently. It was very obvious he wasn’t doing things his triplet siblings could do.”

After conducting research at great length, Karen applied for Disabled Living Allowance (DLA) but her claim was rejected.

“I was very thorough in completing my DLA form.  I felt totally let down for Logan when his DLA claim was rejected.  This was Logan’s claim and he is the one having to live with this life limiting condition.”

But Karen wasn’t going to give up, so she reached out to Muscular Dystrophy UK to help when she received the rejection letter.

Karen said: “I got amazing support from the advocacy team who agreed my claim had been thorough.  They asked me all the questions again and prepared a very strong letter stating the reasons why Logan was entitled to DLA.  He was already in receipt of a blue badge when he got turned down.”

With the support of the advocacy team, the mandatory reconsideration resulted in low rate mobility and middle rate care for Logan.

Karen said: “I’m in agreement with this decision at the moment.  I felt it acknowledged the condition Logan has.  Receiving DLA now means that Logan can access things that I couldn’t afford previously such as horse riding and extra swimming lessons. It also means I can obtain any additional equipment if required.”

She added: “It was so important to us to get this support.  I was at a loss at what more information I could’ve provided to DWP.  I had proof Logan required more care as I have two other children of the same age to compare against – this was overlooked in DWP’s first consideration.”
